Therapy Fees & Insurance

Megan Morales

No Surprise Act

Under the No Surprises Act (H.R. 133 – effective January 1, 2022), healthcare providers need to give clients who do not have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the bill for medical items and services, including therapy services. This Good Faith Estimate (GFE) shows the costs of items and services you can reasonably expect for your healthcare needs.  You have the right to receive a GFE for the total expected cost of any non-emergency items or services.  The GFE does not include any unknown or unexpected costs that may arise during treatment. You may experience additional charges if complications or exceptional circumstances occur.  If you receive a bill of at least $400 more than your GFE, you may dispute or appeal the bill. You may contact the health care provider or facility listed to let them know the billed charges are higher than the GFE. You may ask them to update the bill to match the GFE, negotiate the bill, or ask if financial assistance is available. You may also start a dispute resolution process with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). If you choose to use the dispute resolution process, you must start the dispute process within 120 calendar days of the date on the original bill. There is a $25 fee to use the dispute process. If the agency reviewing your dispute agrees with you, you will have to pay the price of the GFE. If the agency disagrees with you and agrees with the healthcare provider or facility, you will have to pay the higher amount. To learn more, go to www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call 800-985-3059. Sliding Scale Options

I currently reserve two spots for pay-what-you-can clients, but those spots are currently full. At this time, I do not have sliding scale availability. However, I’m happy to help connect you with providers who offer sliding scale options.
