If you’ve ever thought, “Why am I still reacting this way when I know it’s in the past?” — you’re not alone. Emotional pain and trauma don’t just live in our memories. They live in our bodies and nervous systems too.
At Thriving With Therapy, I offer EMDR therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) to help clients process difficult experiences, reduce emotional overwhelm, and reconnect with a sense of calm and safety.
Whether you're here in North Carolina or meeting with me virtually, EMDR can help you feel less stuck and more present. EMDR has become a bit of a buzzword on TikTok, and I constantly see people describe it as life-changing. I have to agree. But let’s break down what EMDR really is so you know what to expect — and most importantly, make sure it offers what you’re looking for.

What Is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR is a research-backed, trauma-informed therapy that helps your brain reprocess distressing memories so they don’t carry the same emotional charge. It’s based on the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model, which says that when we experience something overwhelming or traumatic, our brain doesn’t store the memory in a helpful way.
I like to think of it like a bunch of sticky notes scattered all over a wall instead of being neatly organized in a folder. When our brains store memories this way, they can feel more intense, overwhelming, and come “out of nowhere” — often triggered by sensory reminders.
EMDR helps your brain reorganize and process these experiences in a more adaptive, regulated way. The memories don’t disappear, but the weight they carry begins to lighten.
Originally developed in the 1980s, EMDR uses bilateral stimulation — such as eye movements, tapping, or sounds — while you focus on a specific memory or belief. This activates both hemispheres of the brain and supports natural healing.
What Will It Feel Like?
We always start by building a strong foundation of trust and safety. Before we touch any painful memories, we work on calming tools so you feel grounded and supported.
When you're ready, we’ll identify a target issue and the connected memories, body sensations, and beliefs. Then we introduce bilateral stimulation to begin the reprocessing. It’s like your brain finally files away what’s been sitting out and causing chaos.
Many clients notice shifts in how they feel after just a few sessions. The memory might still exist, but it feels more distant and less emotionally charged.
What Can EMDR Help With and Who Is It For?
EMDR is best known for treating PTSD, but it’s also incredibly helpful for a wide range of emotional challenges rooted in past experiences. It’s especially effective for people who feel stuck in old patterns, emotionally flooded, or triggered by things they don’t fully understand.
EMDR can support those dealing with:
Childhood trauma or emotional neglect
Anxiety or panic attacks
Grief and loss
Low self-worth or chronic shame
Medical trauma or sudden life events like car accidents
Attachment wounds and relational trauma
Challenges related to growing up with emotionally immature parents
This therapy is a great fit for adult children of emotionally immature or narcissistic parents, first-generation college students, high achievers managing chronic stress, and anyone who tends to internalize or intellectualize their struggles without much relief from traditional talk therapy.
EMDR helps reduce emotional reactivity and reconnect you with your strengths, clarity, and calm.
EMDR Therapy in North Carolina
I’m an EMDR Certified Therapist and a Consultant-in-Training, which means I not only use this approach with clients but also support other clinicians in learning the model.
I offer both in-person EMDR sessions and virtual EMDR therapy for clients across North Carolina. Whether you’re in Asheville, Charlotte, Raleigh, or a quiet rural town, we can do this work in a way that feels safe and accessible.
PS. Research shows that virtual EMDR is just as effective as in-person for many clients. I’ll guide you through every step of the process so you feel supported and confident.
Healing Is Possible
You don’t have to keep carrying the emotional weight of what happened. You deserve to feel grounded, present, and connected to the life you want to live.
If you're curious about EMDR or wondering if it’s the right next step in your healing journey, I’d love to talk. I offer free consultations and would be honored to support you.
